I currently play five musical instruments -clarinet, flute, piccolo, tenor saxophone, and alto saxophone - and perform vocally as well. My love of music started at a young age and is an integral part of my identity. I always thought that if I hadn't decided to teach I would seek a career in music. While not pursuing a degree in music education, I am extremely passionate about the role of the arts in education. Through music, art, and dance students can learn a great deal about themselves and participate in creative outlets that stimulate their mind and body simultaneously, further opening themselves up to other forms of learning.
Photography
I have had the privilege of traveling to eight countries outside of the U.S., soon to be nine as I leave for my study abroad experience, and in each case have come back with hundreds of photographs. My favorite pictures are those of beautiful nature scenes like this one, taken in the Swiss Alps, and of old architecture.
Volunteering
Working with young kids has always been a passion of mine, holding a special place in my heart. I've had the privilege of working with kids in many different environments - not just in the classroom, and I hope to continue my work because I truly believe young kids have a lot to offer us. Specifically, I enjoy working with underprivileged kids because I come from a background of poverty myself and was lucky enough to have amazing mentors who helped me to believe in myself and realize that I mattered and could make a difference. While I do a lot of other volunteer work, such as working with Christian organizations to help homeless people and working with the elderly, young kids are my focus.
Being Outdoors
From swimming to hiking, I love being outside! Having grown up in such a beautiful place, much of my childhood was spent outdoors and so anything that has to do with spending time outside - camping, fishing, playing sports - I love.
